How to Start Secret Conversations on Facebook Messenger

If you are looking for ways to start a secret conversation on Facebook Messenger with your friends, then you are at the right place.

In this article, I am going to tell you about Facebook Messenger's new end-to-end encrypted chat feature, called "Secret Conversations," but before that, know why do you need your chats to be end-to-end encrypted?

Your online privacy is under threat not only from online marketers and hackers but also from governments. Just yesterday, it was revealed that Yahoo secretly built hacking tool to scan all of its customers' incoming emails for US intelligence officials.

So, to hide your personal life online from prying eyes, you need end-to-end encryption that allows you to send and receive messages in a way that no one, including the feds with a warrant, hackers and not even the company itself, can intercept or read them.

Last year, WhatsApp became the largest end-to-end encrypted messaging network in history by rolling out another layer of security to its billion users, and now Facebook has finally rolled out end-to-end encryption Secret Conversations feature for its 900 million users of Facebook Messenger.

Though unlike WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger offers end-to-end encrypted chat feature as opt-in, just like Google's Allo smart chat application that provides encrypted chat only if users opt for it.

Here's How to get Started with Secret Conversations:

  • Open Facebook Messenger on your Android or iOS device.
  • Open your existing conversation.
  • Tap the information icon in the upper right corner of your phone.
  • Select 'Secret Conversation'.
That's it. You're done!

Now, all your chats with your selected friend will be end-to-end encrypted that nobody can read or intercept.

This end-to-end encrypted Secret Conversations feature also include self-destructive messages that automatically deleted once the timer set by you get expired.

Messengers Secret Conversations feature is based on the Signal protocol — the same encryption protocol developed by Open Whisper Systems and used by Google's Allo and Facebook-owned Whatsapp.

Here's one thing to note is that you will not be able to send animated GIFs, share videos, or make money transfers in secret conversations, as these features are not supported.

Facebook rolled out Secret Conversations a few months back in July, but yesterday made it available for all of its Messenger users.

Signal App — Security Beyond End-to-end Encryption

However, end-to-end encryption doesn't mean that your tracks are completely clear from spying agencies. It's because Facebook still records and stores metadata on your calls and messages that could reveal some of your personal information including dates and durations of communication, and the participants' phone numbers.

On demand of law enforcement, this data is handed over to the government whenever needed.

Apple's iMessage app is the most recent example of the event, where it was revealed that the company stores a lot of information about its end-to-end encrypted iMessage, which could reveal your contacts and location, and even shares this data with law enforcement via court orders.

So, if you are more privacy conscious, I'll recommend the open source Signal app which is widely considered the most secure of all other end-to-end encrypted messaging apps because it stores minimum information about its users.

When Open Whisper Systems, who created Signal, received a subpoena earlier this year for details on two of its users, it was able to provide just the dates and times of accounts creation and when they last connected to Signal's servers.

Mac Malware Can Secretly Spy On Your Webcam and Mic – Here's How to Stay Safe

Apple Mac Computers are considered to be much safer than Windows at keeping viruses and malware out of its environment, but that’s simply not true.

It's not because Mac OS X is getting worse every day, but because hackers are getting smart and sophisticated these days.

The bad news for Mac users is that malware targeting webcams and microphones has now come up for Mac laptops as well.

Here's How Mac Malware Works:

Since Mac's firmware-level protection lights the green LED for any unauthorized access to user's webcam, Wardle believes that attackers can use a malicious app that quietly monitors the system for any outgoing feed of an existing webcam session – like a Skype or FaceTime call – where the light indicator would already be ON.

The malware then piggybacks the victim's webcam or microphone to secretly record both audio and video session, without any visible indication of this malicious activity and any fear of detection.

In his paper presentation, titled 'Getting Duped: Piggybacking on Webcam Streams for Surreptitious Recordings,' Wardle outlines the threat along with countermeasures to detect "secondary" processes that try to access an existing video session on OS X.

How to Prevent Your WebCam and Mic from Being Hacked

Wardle has developed and released a free tool, dubbed OverSight, which not only monitors webcam and microphone activities but also alerts you when a secondary process accesses your webcam, asking whether you want to allow or block access.

Oversight is a free download from Wardle’s website.

Moreover, physically covering your webcam – like what Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and FBI Director James Comey do – also offers a low-tech approach to keeping snoopers away.

Verizon wants $1 Billion Discount on Yahoo Acquisition Deal after Recent Scandals

It seems like it is not all over for Yahoo yet. Another day, another bad news for Yahoo!

Verizon, which has agreed to purchase Yahoo for $4.8 Billion, is now asking for a $1 Billion discount, according to recent reports.

The request comes after Verizon Communications learned about the recent disclosures about hacking and spying in past few weeks.

Just two weeks ago, Yahoo revealed that at least a half  Billion Yahoo accounts were stolen in 2014 hack, marking it as the biggest data breach in history.

And if this wasn't enough, the company faced allegations earlier this week that it built a secret tool to scan all of its users' emails last year at the behest of a United States intelligence agency.

Due to these incidents, AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, who runs the Verizon subsidiary, is "pretty upset" about Yahoo's lack of disclosure, and is even seeking to pull out of the deal completely or cut the price, the New York Post claimed, citing multiple sources.

"In the last day, we've heard that Tim [Armstrong] is getting cold feet," a source reportedly told the Post. "He's pretty upset about the lack of disclosure, and he's saying can we get out of this or can we reduce the price?"
Armstrong is reportedly discussing a price reduction with Yahoo executives, though Yahoo is pushing back, claiming a "deal is a deal" and there's no legal recourse to change the terms, according to the paper.

Both Verizon and Yahoo have yet to comment on the matter.

Verizon announced the Yahoo acquisition deal in July, with the intention of merging it with AOL. The company is thinking to combine Yahoo and AOL to form a third force to compete with Google and Facebook for digital advertising.

The acquisition deal is supposed to close early next year, merging Yahoo's search, advertising, content, and mobile operations with AOL to reach 1 Billion users.

London Police Arrest Romanian ATM Hacker Who Stole Millions

A Romanian man has been arrested and charged with conspiracy relating to his involvement in a prolific ATM malware campaign.

Emanual Leahu, 30, was arrested in the western city of Bacău, Romania by the London Regional Fraud Team (LRFT) London police run by the City of London Police on Tuesday 20 September, extradited to the United Kingdom last week.

Leahu is believed to be a member of a European ATM hacking gang that stole more than £1.5 Million ($2 Million) from cash machines across the UK in 2014 using ATM malware to bypass security controls.

The gang physically broke into ATMs to directly load malware onto the machines, allowing it to withdraw"large amounts of cash." The malware was good enough to erase itself to hide its tracks, making it difficult to identify the culprit.

Three out of Five Gang Members Arrested

Luckily, due to the gang's carelessness, one of its members was recorded by a hidden ATM surveillance camera, which allowed the police to identify and arrest him.

The gang hit 51 ATMs in standalone public places across the UK, including London, Portsmouth, Bognor Regis, Brighton and Liverpool over the 2014 May Bank Holiday weekend.

This is the third arrest in the case after Grigore Paladi and Teofil Bortos, who were arrested and sentenced in 2014 and 2015 to 5 and 7 years in jail for their roles in robbing vulnerable ATMs.

According to the UK authorities, the gang has five members, with the other two suspects still remain at large in Romania. European arrest warrants have already been issued in their names as well.

Police also ensured bank customers that they are not affected by the theft as the gang's malware only tricked the bank ATMs to release cash, not from customers' accounts.

Global Campaigns to Bust ATM fraudsters

UK Police has recently risen to help international crime fighting efforts dedicated to anti-fraud and cracking down ATM hackers.
"Operating across borders has its challenges, but overseas law enforcement has been extremely co-operative, especially in Romania," LRFT head, detective inspector Matthew Mountford said. "Working together we will continue to ensure that organised criminal gang members have nowhere to hide."
Earlier this year, European police arrested eight members of an international ATM hacking gang who robbed ATMs across Europe and beyond using Tyupkin malware that made them the made millions in cash.

ATM fraudsters have risen in past few years. Just over a month back, the Central Bank of Thailand (BoT) issued a warning to all commercial banks about security flaws in their ATMs that made hackers over 12.29 Million Thailand Baht (over US$346,000).

A few months ago, ATM fraudsters managed to steal ¥1.4 Billion (approx. US$12.7 Million) from some 1,400 ATMs placed in small convenience stores across Japan.

How to fix: Limited WiFi connection problem in Windows 8.1(new)

Here's the instructions:

1. You can do this by going to Device Manager:

2. Right click on your Network Adapters that is limited(Wireless Network Adapter) or you can doubleclick to it, go to Driver, go to Update Driver:

3. Then "Browse my computer for driver software:

4. Then "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer":

5. You see 2 drivers for the same broadcom adapter. One by Broadcom, the other fromMicrosoft. Choose the Broadcom oneInstall. Springs back to life.

How to fix: Limited WiFi connection problem in Windows 8.1

Windows 8.1 Wifi showing "limited" or "No Internet Access":

Some Windows users are experiencing a strange problem. After installing the preview version of Windows 8.1, they observed that their device was showing ‘Limited Connectivity’ error in WiFi status and they couldn’t access the internet until re-connected.

I realized this is a common issue with Windows 8.1. In some cases, even resetting the device and starting over didn’t help. After following some forums, I thought of giving some suggestions.

Here is the guide to fix this problem:

Limited WiFi connection

First create a system restore point. Then right-click the ’Start’ button to access ‘Control Panel’ option and select it.

Next, chose ‘Device Manager’ option.

Next select ‘Network Adapters’ and under it, you will find a Wi-Fi controller listed. Select it.

Right-click the controller and click the ‘Disable’ button and hit ‘Ok’ to apply the changes. See if it helps. If it does not help, re-enable it and proceed to the next step.

If the above solution fails, try doing the following.

Open an admin-level command prompt in Desktop mode, type the following commands, and hit Enter after each command:

Code:
netsh int tcp set heuristics disabled

Code:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

Code:
netsh int tcp set global rss=enabled

Then type the following and hit Enter, to verify that practically all the settings are disabled.

Code:
netsh int tcp show global

Finally, reboot your machine and see if this helps.

How to fix limited or no connectivity Wi-Fi issues in Windows 8

What happens when Windows 8 or 8.1 shows the following arcane message whenever you try to connect to your wireless network:
This connection has limited or no connectivity.  No internet access
Or maybe you’ve seen this laconic message:
The connection is limited

The limited connectivity issue is a vexing problem partially because the error is so freggin’ nebulous and also because you can easily waste an entire day trying to fix it.  What’s even more confounding is that sometimes you’ll see this error even though you have five bars of signal strength (just like me in the above graphic)
Usually most people try disconnecting and reconnecting and a few audacious neophytes try uninstalling the network adapter.
You actually don’t need to go to such bold lengths…
Here are four tricks that will almost certainly fix this problem:
    • Reset the TCP/IP stack
    • Disable Wi-Fi adapter napping
    • Enabling Metered Connection Downloads
    • Reset TCP/IP Autotuning

      1. Use netsh.exe

    • There are a few things you can do to fix this problem but the easiest and most common solution is to usenetsh to reset the TCP/IP stack to its default configuration.
    • The NetShell utility (netsh.exe) is a highly versatile tool that lets power users manage a myriad of computer processes right from the command line.  Here’s how to put the tool to work for you:
    • Press the Windows Key + x + a to launch the Command Prompt with administrator rights.

Now in the black window type the following command:
    netsh int ip reset C:\resetlog.txt
Then reboot the computer and retry the internet connection.  It should connect fine now.

    2. Wake up your Wi-Fi Adapter

If this only temporarily absolves the issue then the network adapter might be going into a sleep mode to conserve energy.
Press Windows Key + w to bring up the Settings search box and type:
    network and sharing center

Click on the name of your Wi-Fi network and choose the Properties button in the lower left corner under.

In the Wi-Fi Properties window click the Configure button.

Then pick the last tab called Power Management and you’ll see this option:
Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Uncheck it, click OK and then login to your computer again to confirm the fix.

    3. Enable Download over metered connections

If you’re iPhone, Blackberry or Galaxy S4 as a mobile hotspot, turning on Download over metered connections might just do the trick.
Press the Windows Key + w and type
    metered connections
When the Devices screen flips onto the screen, toggle the knob to On then logout and login to your computer to apply the change.

Keep in mind you should try this even if you know for sure that you aren’t using a metered connection.  I know that sounds inane but for some reason turning this on fixes the problem.
No no no, I’m not talking about the audio processor created by Antares that hip hop producers use to make musical artists sound like musical robots.  That’s auto tune.  Autotunning, as it applies to networks, refers to modifying the congestion buffers to allow reliable connectivity.

Using the following three netsh commands in Windows 8 and 8.1 might fix the issue.  I haven’t corroborated the result so I don’t know if it works but it’s certainly worth a shot:
netsh int tcp set heuristics disabled
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
netsh int tcp set global rss=enabled

Let me explain what all this does:
The first netsh command disables the scaling window in TCP after the second re-transmission of a SYN packet.  The details are kind of abstruse so I’ll spare them but the bottom line is that sometimes Windows seems to arbitrarily change the way the TCP buffers are sized.
Executing the above netsh commands changes the TCP Window size to 65,535 and enforces the change which precludes Windows 8 from flubbing with it again.
    Update 08/18/2014
Lenovo Yogo users should use the sets above with caution.  At least one user (See Austin in the comments below) discovered using netsh.exe crashed rtwlanu.exe.
    Update 08/22/2014
One of my readers, Erik, had this issue on his Dell Venue 11i Pro.  He couldn’t connect to Wi-fi on battery power.  He ended up fixing it by changing the power options for the Wifi card from high energy savings to low.

    The Bottom Line

Whenever your Wi-Fi network shows limited access try the simple stuff first like rebooting or reconnecting.  If that doesn’t work, reset the TCP/IP stack, wake up your Wi-Fi adapter, enabling metering and reset autotunning.  That should get you back online!
Have you had success using the techniques I enumerated  in this article?  Please let me know in the comments!  I’m curious which one worked for ya.
